JAR: About Geranium earclips and brilliant design


Every time there is a piece made by JAR coming up for auction one gets reminded again of his genius. JAR is the only jeweller whose pieces achieve prices that double or triple the retail price at which he has previously sold them to his privileged customers. For normally, at jewellery auctions pieces are estimated by the auction house at one third of their retail price.

Much has been written about JAR's marketing genius, the fact that his Place Vendome shop has no window or regular opening hours, his reservation of the right to sell to a particular client if he thinks the pieces does not suit them and the long waiting list of celebrities and collectors that yearn to obtain one of his precious 80 or 90 unique creations every year. However, very little can be found about the pieces themselves and why are they so special. To me, JAR is like a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes, the pieces go beyond fashion and they just make you look great, they suit and make the wearer look more beautiful without necessarily drawing the attention towards the objects. As Coco Chanel used to say, when a dress is truly well cut, people do not admire the dress, they admire the woman. In short, clever, long lasting designs that create addiction.

The earclips above will be auctioned at Sotheby's NY on February 7th.
